OIT LAN NDS Support
OIT
LAN Support Novell NDS Support
The Novell NDS tree
for the UMASS campus encompasses over 20 servers. Management of directory syncronization and replica placement is handled by OIT LAN Support. OIT will try to
keep at least three replicas of every partition.
Any department can become part of the NDS tree. When added to the tree the
department will maintain full control over their container and any branches off of their
container. They will also have the ability to grant other departments rights to
objects within their container.
In order to add a server into the tree the department needs to understand and agree to
the following:
- OIT LAN support will have administrative control over the entire tree including every
departments container.
- In order to maintain the integrity of the tree any server added to the tree must be
built as a server and not a souped up workstation. Also every server must run either
RAID 1 or RAID 5. We recomend one of the Compaq Proliant series servers.
- Either OIT LAN Support or the local administrator must keep the server up to the minimum patch levels.
In order to keep the tree up OIT has two Novell servers. Each provides redundancy for the root replica as well as redunancy for the Netware 5/6/7 DSS traffic. OIT also maintains an enterprise certificate authority for
the tree. Netware IP support is no longer provided so Netware 4 servers are no longer supported.
